A Civil lawyer represents his/her clients to get their legal rights protected in time. He is a legal officer of the legal system prevailing in a state in the US. They are responsible to keep up the quality of justice for the best interests of the citizens of a country. As representatives of the clients, civil lawyers perform various functions while as advisors they make the clients understand their legal rights and the ways and means to protect it in time. As a negotiator, a civil lawyer tries his best to reach at an amicable settlement which is advantageous to the clients. As a spokes person and an intermediary of his/her client, the civil lawyer meets and speaks to the concerned with regard to the legal issues. Civil lawyers work for individuals and corporate alike and their functions range from drafting the legal documents to appearing in the court of law representing their clients.
Duties and functions of a Civil lawyer
Communication: – Communication plays a very vital role in a lawyer’s profession. They should communicate with their clients to know more about the nature and intensity of the case. They may have to interview some witnesses and others close to the clients to gather more information about the case.
Case Management:- It is the duty of a civil lawyer to take up the task of case management properly, such as checking the developments of a case, making arrangements for document preparation, reviewing other valid evidences related to the case. Knowing the opposition’s power is also a major responsibility of a civil lawyer to assess the possible outcome of the case.
Pleadings: – These are the documents a lawyer prepares for responding to the court. Pleading includes answer to a complaint and designation of expert witnesses.
Mediations and hearings: – Civil lawyers do attend some conciliation talks which may lead to an amicable settlement of an issue. If it does not work out well, then the case will be taken to the court and the lawyer will appear for his client before the Jury.
Settlement negotiations: – Civil lawyers try to resolve a case, proposing a settlement with the opposition counsel. This is done by way of proposing a settlement amount to the opposing party which could be accepted or can be asked for a counter offer.

To represent a client in a civil case, to draw up legal documents in time, advise the clients on legal transactions, to make the clients understand the nature of legal proceedings and the probable aftermath of the same. They act as negotiators, advisors, legal representatives and intermediaries for amicable settlements for their clients. Civil lawyer can practice independently or work for a firm partnering with other lawyer friends. Civil lawyers normally concentrate on civil cases only. Since the civil cases may prolong for years together, they get engaged in their jobs all through. This may not be the case with some other areas of law. However when compared to criminal lawyers, civil lawyers are less paid but the demand for this legal practice in as same as any other legal profession, if not more.
