Liberal Politics

There are many Americans who believe that any American citizen should be able to marry who ever they want. Whether that person is of the same sex or not. Liberalism promotes freedom and liberty for all people. The conservatives who are against gay marriage have never presented much of an argument. Liberal politics should not play a role in this issue, because this has to due with individual rights. If a man wants to marry another man, that will not effect anybody else besides the two men getting married. People who believe in liberalism believe that anybody should be able to do what they want as long as it is not harming anybody else. Those who object to gay marriage claim that gay couples should not receive the same tax benefits as straight couples, but why? If a gay couple receives tax benefits how does that effect anybody else? The main argument that conservatives make is that gay marriages ruin the basic institution of marriage. However, that is based on opinion and it is also unclear on how the effects anybody personally. To those that believe in liberalism, it seems that conservatives are against gay marriages due to a personal bias. It would make the debate healthier if people were honest about why they were against it instead of playing liberal politics with an important matter. Liberalism is argued to be one of the healthiest beliefs in today’s society. We should be able to tell anybody what they can or cannot do just because we do not agree with it. This game of liberal politics might help politicians gain political points. However, liberal politics are not doing any good for homosexuals that are denied the right to marry the person that they love.

It is liberalism that is helping this cause make sufficient progress. In addition to gay marriage, liberals have fought hard to get the don’t ask don’t tell policy of the military appealed and the matter recently had it’s first hearing in over seventeen years. Conservatives seem to be against everything and not for anything. It is very hard for the country to make progress when we are not willing to change. By electing Barack Obama as the President of the United States, gays and lesbians have seen some progress in government, but President Obama has not been as active in office as he claimed he would be during his presidential campaign. However, gay activists have come a long way in the past century. It was not too long ago when even admitting you were gay would result in being scorned and harsh legal punishments.
